Why Are the Pipes in My Home Making a Strange Noise?

Are you noticing a strange noise coming from the pipes in your home? Does it make you wonder what’s going on and whether you should be concerned? Any time you notice the pipes in your Lubbock, Texas, home making a strange noise is a cause for concern. Contacting a professional plumber is the smartest move to make. Keep reading to learn more about strange pipe noises and how to address them.

Check the Air Chamber

When air chambers become filled with water, they will lose their effectiveness and cause the pipes to make a strange noise. The process of flushing the air chambers requires shutting off the water and turning on all faucets to drain them. Once the water is turned back on, all air chambers will be flushed and should start functioning normally.

Consider Installing a Water Hammer

Unlike air chambers, if you have a water hammer installed, you won’t have to worry about it becoming waterlogged. Only a professional plumber should install one as its many components require skillful installation. The water hammer will divert water when your faucets are shut off and help prevent the pipes from making strange noises.

Adjust the Water Pressure

Normally, the water pressure in a home will be set anywhere from 40 to 60 psi. When it’s set higher than 60 psi, you’re likely to hear strange noises coming from your pipes. A simple adjustment can remedy this problem. As with all types of plumbing tasks, though, it’s best to have a professional plumber check the pressure and perform any adjustments.

Check the Fill Valve

Much of the time, the pipes will make strange noises because the fill valve on the toilet isn’t working as it should. Strange noises may include humming, a loud foghorn-like sound, and even wailing noises. A plumber can check the bottom of the tank to see if the fill valve is working properly. If it’s not, it may need to be adjusted or replaced.
