4 Ways to Improve HVAC Efficiency and Combat Allergens

Your HVAC system’s efficiency is essential to its performance. Every homeowner in Lubbock, Texas, should know that HVAC efficiency can help combat allergens and simple maintenance can keep HVAC systems running smoothly. Let’s explore some ways that you can improve your HVAC’s efficiency and the air quality in your home.

Check the HVAC Filters

HVAC filters are available in a variety of minimum efficiency recording values, or MERVs, which measure how good they are at filtering particles out of the air. But even the most efficient filter won’t help without regular maintenance. Filters should be changed at least once every three months, but it’s a good idea to check the condition of the filter more often. If the filter is damaged or damp, it should be replaced immediately. You can change the filter, or ask your HVAC technician for help.

Dust Return Vents and Open Supply Vents

You may already be taking great care of your home, dusting often and making sure that what’s outside stays outside. But if you don’t take care of your vents, your HVAC system’s efficiency may suffer.

First, make sure to dust return vents often. If these vents pull in dust, your HVAC system will circulate that dust. Also, try to keep return and supply vents clear of blockages like rugs or furniture. And if a supply vent is closed, even if it’s in a room you don’t use often, you should open it. Closing or blocking supply vents can increase the pressure on the ducts in your house and may lead to your HVAC system becoming less efficient.

Maintain Humidity Levels

If you want to ensure that your home is a comfortable living environment, then you need to make sure your humidity levels are balanced. If your air is too dry or too moist, it can can exacerbate your allergy symptoms, such as sneezing and congestion. Your indoor relative humidity should be between 30 and 50% for your home to stay comfortable. However, the ideal humidity level will change depending on the outdoor temperature.

Invest in a whole-home humidifier or dehumidifier to keep your relative humidity levels balanced. A humidifier can be used in the summer when the air has more moisture, and a dehumidifier can be used in the winter when the air is too dry.

Every HVAC system needs regular maintenance, and making sure that the system is at peak efficiency will go a long way in helping to keep your house free of dust and allergens.
